A two-day immersion in Rome
Our resources in this city are considerable. With over 60 scholars in archaeology, art, and other disciplines, we've crafted a 2½-day investigation of Rome's millennia through the lenses of art, archaeology, history, and food. We'll begin with ancient Rome and a series of seminars on archaeology and classical society. We'll visit the Colosseum and Forum, but also explore the city's late antique churches and medieval cloisters. Through special arrangement we'll enter a subterranean archaeological site in the company of a trained speleologist that was once the largest gladiator training school in the Empire.
We'll then turn our attention to papal Rome and discuss the far-reaching changes that gripped the city during the Renaissance and Baroque ages. We'll look at the private collection of the Borghese family as we paint a portrait of power and patronage in the 16th and 17th centuries, before joining one of our art historians for an in-depth study of Caravaggio, an emblematic artist of this period.
We'll eat well, too, enjoying a seminar on Italian wines and meals in some of the city's most characteristic trattorie (small restaurants) rounding out our experience of Rome by educating our bellies as much as our minds.
* This trip can also be booked privately upon request for parties of people traveling together. The cost of this is €2200 for the group plus €445 per person. Simply contact us by email if you would like to place a request.
